Writing a News Release
The news release is the single most important vehicle in communicating with the media.
There are five key points in writing a news release:
* Is it newsworthy?
* Does it put the facts up front? Many media professionals will not read beyond the first paragraph if it is of no interest to them.
* Remember to KISS. (Keep It Simple Stupid). Be succinct and straightforward in your news writing. Flowery words and poetic phrases do not lend themselves to news reporting style.
* Send it to the appropriate person. Try to send the news release to a specific individual. It stands a greater chance of being opened and read, and it shows you have done your homework. At least, make sure you get it to the right department.
* Think ahead! What is your timing? You should mail releases three weeks in advance of an event, or immediately after an event or an announcement.
